In his third year as head coach, Vogel led Iowa to its first conference title, finishing in a tie for first place with Illinois. His Hawkeyes teams would win back-to-back Big Ten crowns in 1938 and 1939, as well as championships in 1942 and 1949.
Vogel is a member of the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and served as ABCA president in 1953.
