After serving in the Navy during World War II, Paul Gregory's coaching career began in 1947 when he was asked by his former Mississippi State baseball coach Dudy Noble, also the school's athletic director, to coach the Bulldogs basketball team.
In 1957, Gregory took over the Bulldogs baseball program, serving as head coach until 1974. Gregory led the Bulldogs baseball team to a 328-200-1 (.621) record and 15 winning seasons, as well as four Southeastern Conference titles and a 1971 College World Series appearance.
