Bill McCabe retired in 1987 after 25 years at Eastern Illinois University as a teacher, coach and administrator. He coached the Panthers baseball team from 1963-74 finishing his 11 year run with a 201-133 (.602) record.

McCabe's 1973 team finished third in the NCAA College Division World Series.

Earlier in his coaching career McCabe was the first baseball coach to post a 20-win season, which he did in 1964, with his team reaching the NAIA College World Series.

Three of McCabe's former players went on to play in the Major Leagues including 15-year veteran Marty Pattin.

McCabe was inducted into the Eastern Illinois Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988.
